Summary: Ed's thoughts as he drives the last few miles to Bud and Lynn's house
The distance to Bud and Lynn's house in Bisbee seemed longer toward the end of the drive. It was almost as if the universe was daring Ed to turn around and go back to Los Angeles. He hadn't seen either of them since they'd left and he was happy to get an invitation to visit.
Still, Ed wondered if they had changed much in their time away. If they had become one of those couples who finished each other's sentences. If Bud had healed completely and become settled and content in his new town. If the connection he'd felt with Bud, brief as it was, could still flare to life when they were in each other's orbit or if it was all an illusion.
Mile after mile passed until he finally pulled his sedan in front of Bud and Lynn's little house. He could see a slight movement of the curtain at the window, and as he came up the walk a few moments later, a smiling Bud opened the door and asked, “What took you so long?”
