Summary: Miss Marple and Dolly Bantry visit a flower garden in the rain.
“…ah, yes, I see your point,” said the vicar, retired vicar, in fact, but no one seemed to remember that. He was clutching the umbrella and angling in a somewhat vain attempt to keep the rain off both ladies as they made their way along the path, slowly and carefully.
The rest of the ‘Stately Homes & Gardens’ tour had elected to stay in the hall and wait out the storm with tea and buns, but these two, the vicar realised, with much amusement, were made of sterner stuff! Just his sort! The frailer one, or rather frailer looking one, seemed very determined, indeed, about something or other. Still, they must move gingerly. None of them were as young as they once were, and it wouldn’t do for anyone to slip and fall on the third day of a fortnight tour—himself included!
“Too deep,” declared Dolly Bantry as they approached a glorious bed of tall yellow irises. Dolly gave the flowers the kind of nod a general might give to his troops upon a favorable inspection.
“That was the problem. Next year I am going to try a shallower trench and a change of fertiliser.”
“Oh, now there I do have a recommendation,” said the vicar. “For my camellias, I have always sworn by…”
“There,” interrupted Miss Marple.
“Lord!” gasped Dolly. “Is that…?”
“Camellia, our guide,” replied Miss Marple as the vicar stepped forward. “We mustn’t disturb anything, vicar,” she cautioned. “The police must be notified.”
“She’s…?” asked the vicar.
“Dead? Yes,” said Miss Marple. “Camellia, in my grandmother’s language of flowers it meant ‘perfected loveliness.’”
“Perfected loveliness in a shallow grave,” observed Dolly grimly. She looked from the lifeless body surrounded by flowers to the face of her friend. “It’s going to be an interesting tour, isn’t it?"
