Title: Gladiolus
Prompt: blade
Rating: Gen
Pairing: Hades/Persephone
Fandom: Greek Mythology
Length: 300
For:
dr_zook and the Sunshine Challenge (theme #2: gladiolus)
Summary: Persephone creates a flower crown for her spouse.
At the break of spring, Persephone left the underworld with a pouch of soil tethered under her skirts, but upon collecting bulbs and finding the ideal spot, she discovered the earth she carried was not sufficient for her purpose. And so she set out with two pouches under her skirt. She roamed, touching drying ground, crumbling ground, muddy ground, with her tongue. She was not satisfied until she reached an arena where the fiercest warriors battled. There, the sand was mixed with blood and sweat and spit. There, Persephone knelt and with two hands scooped a healthy portion into her pouch. She returned to her garden bed and prepared the soil. When the bulbs were buried, she waited. The rains came and went, and nothing stirred. Vexed, Persephone began to cry. And then, where her tears fell to earth, the tiniest shoots broke through the tended earth. And so, Persephone thought of baby animals and rushing rivers and cried joyful tears. She thought of baby animals snared in traps and raging rivers destroying everything in their paths and cried tears of sorrow. She cried and she cried, and the summer came, and shoots became stems which became stalks which grew tall and proud and pointed like the spears of the fallen warriors. And spears bore buds which looked like blades sheathed in scabbards. And the blades became blooms. The blooms were trumpets, stacked in towering staffs. They were red streaked with white and black streaked with white. They were bronze and gold and silver. They grew and grew and grew. And, just as autumn yielded to winter, Persephone picked the finest specimens and wove them into a crown to present to her husband upon her return.
And the Lord of the Underworld gilded the offering and wore it for eternity.
