“Bravery isn’t never being afraid,” said Lestrade. “It’s being afraid but doing the right thing anyway. Why, look at me. Sometimes, I’m afraid.”
“You?” asked the boy, eyes round with incredulity.
“Me!” said Lestrade with a chuckle. “There are times when I am positively shaking in my boots, but I know my job is an important one, that I help people, that I make life safer for people, so, I do it. You were brave to stand up to those bullies even though you were scared and even though things didn’t turn out the way you wanted or hoped. You were also brave to ask for help. It’s not weakness at all. I ask for help all the time.”
The boy giggled. “From Mister Holmes.”
“That’s right. And he and I are going to set things straight, don’t you worry. You brought us good information about who the gang are and what they are up to, and we’re going catch them and make certain they can’t bully anyone anymore. And guess what?”
“What?”
“You’re going to help us.”
The boy grinned a toothy grin, which was so sweet, Lestrade couldn’t help but return it.
“We’re going to be brave together.”
