I can do this, Sally tells herself. I've been cast in the role of mother more times than I can count. Mother to people who were eight years younger than herself, her mind adds, before she can tell it to shut up.
She stares at the stick with the two lines, squints at them until they seem to merge into just one. Her heart rate slows, she feels like she can breathe again.
Until her eyes readjust and the cold reality of the positive pregnancy test stares her in the face once again.
She absolutely cannot do this.
The door opens and Barry comes into the house. She hears him in the kitchen. He was just at the store, so he's probably putting groceries away.
She stares at the test, closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, then walks out the door with a smile on her face and says, “Guess what? We're pregnant.”
