Forget Ortolani's “don't smile” rule. Tobias soon learned that you could never be alone in prison. It was dangerous and the quickest way to get pragged out or killed. Having a few people that you hung around with during daylight hours was good. Having an affiliation was better- the Muslims knew that, the homeboys knew that, as did the Aryans. Even the gays had their own clique. And if you were alone, the chances that you'd get picked up by someone not looking out for your best interest was high.
He'd escaped things quickly with Adebisi, falling right into Schillinger's trap. Being in that relationship drove him to the brink of madness. When the hacks finally threw him into the hole, he realized there was one place in this prison where he was safe being alone.
