Summary: When Querns' car is in the shop, he has to ride with some of his staff. It may be a decision he comes to regret.
“Go ahead, Warden, get in,” said Tim.
“Thanks.” Querns got in Tim's car and fastened his seat belt, while Tim did the same.
“You good?”
“Yeah. They said the car would be ready tomorrow. I hope so.”
Tim started the ignition. The stereo kicked on and what sounded like a boy band poured through the speakers.
“Figured you more of a classic rock fan,” said Querns.
“Normally, yes, but Sean wanted to get an early start this year.”
“An early start on...” Querns stopped when the familiar sound of sleigh bells jingled. “But it's October.”
“Yes, and according to Sean we're a month behind.”
“...under the mistletoe with you...” the voice sang through the speakers.
Querns watched the scenery fly past the window, contemplating whether throwing himself out the car would be a good idea.
“...under the mistletoe with you...” the voice sang through the speakers.
Querns let out a groan.
“Sorry about that,” said Sean. “Tim thought we should start practicing early. I can turn it off.”
“No need. It's your car. I appreciate you taking me to the shop to get mine.”
By the second mile, Querns was humming along with the lyrics.
By the fifth, he was singing the “With You”s.
When they were a mile from the repair shop, he joined in on the chorus.
“You're getting the hang of it, Warden,” Sean said, pulling the car into the repair shop parking lot.
“Well,” Querns said, “we're here. Thank you for the ride. And, Sean, you tell anyone about this and I'll have you transferred back to Attica. Understand?”
“Very clearly, sir. Have a good night.”
“You as well,” Querns said with a smile.
Sean couldn't be sure but he'd swear that Querns was humming “Mistletoe” as he got out of the car and walked away.
