“I don't know. Probably just sitting at home with Lynn, waiting to ring in the New Year properly. Don't tell me you're going to come down the mountain to grace us with your presence this year.”
“I was thinking about it. Is there still a spot on the couch for me?”
“No.”
“Well, I could get a hotel.”
“You'll do no such thing.”
“I wasn't sure if you and Lynn wanted to ring the year in privately.”
“Exley, if you're coming all this way, Lynn and I are going to show you how wonderful 1958 can be. And don't you start in on whether or not Lynn is going to feel the same way, you know she'll be over the moon. She's at the dress shop now, but I'll tell her as soon as she gets home. She'll need to prepare. She always wants to make it special for you. I think she hopes that one day maybe you'll stay.”
“And what does White hope?”
“No, you're not trapping me into that, Ed. I know it takes time.”
“Not as much anymore. This life, this job, the world, it's all changing. I might have peaked too soon.”
Bud bit out a harsh laugh. “The day you stop...”
“The day I stop, you'll be the first to know. But for now, it's New Year's Eve.”
“I'll get an extra six-pack of that beer you pretend not to like.”
