The more Barry read on the subject of Abraham Lincoln, the more he wondered why people continued to think of the sixteenth President as a hero. When he mentioned this to Sally, she merely mumbled, “Must've had a great agent.” Maybe dying like Lincoln did cut short the possibility of ruining his legacy.

Nonetheless, Barry felt that this was a good teaching moment for John. Barry could tell him that Lincoln did a lot of good things, but he made mistakes. He recited a list of Lincoln's flaws and told John that nobody was perfect and even people who had excellent intentions messed up every so often.

“Even you, Dad?” asked John.

“Yep, even me,” said Barry. “The only person who ever roamed the Earth that was perfect was Jesus Christ. And even though we try our best to be like Him, we're still human enough to make wrong choices. You're a good person, John, with a good heart. If you keep coming back to that, I know you'll do just fine.”

Barry wrapped his arm around his son and gave John a sideways hug. He said to himself, “I'm a good person.” One day it might even prove true.
