Title: Strong Enough to Walk Away
Fandom: L.A. Confidential
Characters: Bud White, Ed Exley (mention of Lynn Bracken)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 220
Prompt: Strength
Summary: Bud thinks about something that Ed said many years ago
“I don't have your strength,” Ed said to him once during a phone conversation. Bud had laughed it off at the time as just Ed stating the obvious. Exley hadn't exactly made a name for himself by throwing men across rooms or holding them by their feet as they dangled twenty feet in the air.
But now as Ed had declined another invitation to come and visit, Bud gave the statement a second thought. Maybe Exley was talking about the fact that Bud had come away from the Night Owl and all it represented and was content to leave it all behind. Exley was still chasing the Rollo Tomasi's of the world and would never be able to walk away from that. He clung to the familiar, the system that he loved and could manipulate. He made gains but ever since that night at the Victory Motel, he never took a chance that he could be anything else.
Bud had been strong enough to break free, been strong enough to build a life outside of Los Angeles. It wasn't glamorous, in fact, some days it was downright dull, but he wouldn't change it for anything.
He had faith that one day Ed would venture outside the city limits, and when that day came, both he and Lynn would be waiting.
