Title: Fantastical
Fandom: Original Work
Rating: G
Words: 100
Characters: N/A
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Mermaid
Summary: Fiction and fantasy as a safe exploration of our fears

With the pages spread between my hands, I need not heed the warnings. I swim with the mermaid and know she will never drag me under; I dance with the fairies and lose not a moment to them; the dragon’s fire leaves me unburnt. Our mundane fears are broken down here, transformed into something just close enough to recognize, just distant enough to be safe.

In this way, we learn to appreciate it, to see the beauty in the things that frighten us. Mere words indulge our curiosity and echo these feelings, and in this way, we escape our fears.

Title: Drops of Rain
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: G
Words: 100
Characters: Luke Skywalker, Rebel Alliance Members
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Spellbound
Summary: Luke experiences rain for the first time.

The occasional tap against his skin had startled him, and it wasn’t until someone had groaned about it starting to rain that Luke realized what was happening. Scattered drops increased in frequency until the whole sky fell to meet the Rebel encampment in a mesmerizing dance.

He barely registered the voice behind him. “You’ve never seen rain before, farmboy?”

In holofilm, certainly. But it hadn’t done this any justice. His vision focused and unfocused, chasing individual drops speeding by, then trying to watch all of them at once.

Luke stood there, spellbound and uncaring that his clothes became soaked through.

Title: Awake in the Night
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! DM
Rating: G
Words: 100
Characters: Yami Yuugi
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Puzzle
Summary: Yuugi is alseep, the other Yuugi is not.

His partner is fast asleep, comfortable even with the Puzzle caught between his arm and chest. But the other Yuugi has plenty of time to rest (as long as there isn’t a tournament or a crisis – if there’s any difference), so he does not sleep now. It’s some effort to be present in the world like this, but the alternative is once again wandering through the endless tomb maze of his soul. Even under the desaturation and silence of night, the bedroom is so much more warm and lively.

A ghost, he thinks, can be forgiven for indulging in that.

Title: Standing out, screaming loud
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: G
Words: 300
Characters: Darth Maul, Original Droid Characters
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Strength
Summary: Maul monologues to a bemused droid who just wants to do its job.

“Yes, my brother. This establishment is small and shoddily constructed, but adequate enough for my current needs, I believe.

“You, droid. You will provide your services to me with haste, as my path has brought me here to renew my strength. Strength, I say, in the base physical sense. My true strength, my power, my willpower; that I never lost, nor faltered in for even a moment. I could not have clung to life as I did when he took everything from me…on strength and hatred alone I survived, grasping, grasping, grasping…but at last, I was pulled from wretched existence I endured since I was thrown away, left for dead among the trash and refuse. Such could I have been counted as, then.

“I have not forgotten this. It was not enough that he took my legs, not enough that he deprived me of my position, robbed me of the future that I now can see playing out from the sidelines, replaced by an inferior apprentice…no, even that was not enough; because of him I was subjected to those conditions of humiliation, of madness, of filth.

“But I will not stay on the sidelines. Nor will I simply reclaim my old position. My ambitions are far greater now. And I will never be discarded again.

“My revenge…it will come. Those long years have taught me patience, if nothing else. Still…still, he was in my grasp. For a moment, I believed I could begin to return the torture he had inflicted on me. And yet…he slipped away, and I must bide my time to set up my final revenge. I will break him, no matter how long it takes. No matter how many further indignities I must suffer.”

“Sir, this is a spaceport speed diner…”

Title: Merely a Thief
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: G
Words: 100
Characters: Original Character
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Night
Summary: Secrets stolen in the daylight, whispered at night.

A good thief, she thinks, walks out empty-handed.

Not that most would call her that. An information broker, an informant, a spy, perhaps.

Too grandiose. She’s merely a thief, even if the stolen goods only exist in her mind. Easier to transport, that way; harder to trace. Even copying information out of a database leaves signs. But just remembering it? Nothing suspicious about doing her day job.

All her thievery is done in the daylight; the night is for selling the goods. The Rebellion doesn’t pay as much for words alone, but, well, she’s not doing this for the money.

Title: Hypnotic travelers, drift until lost
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: G
Words: 100
Characters: Original Jedi Character
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Journey
Summary: A fugitive Jedi makes a quiet escape.

The spaceport was pressed full of people and swelled with the full range of sapient emotion, but tasting of anxiety and uncertainty above all else. Not only the sharp panic of beings about to miss their shuttle, but also a silent, heavy thing, of furtive glances cast towards the newly increased stormtrooper presence.

It had been a risk to come here now. But a busy spaceport was easier to pass through without scrutiny.

The fugitive took in the transports at a glance, not caring much where they were headed, as long as the journey took them far away from here.

Title: Sleep the Deep
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! DM
Rating: G
Words: 200
Characters: Yuugi Mutou
Relationships: Yuugi & Yami Yuugi
Prompt: Soul
Summary: On a restless night, Yuugi wanders into his other self's soul room.

Yuugi hesitantly pushed open the door to his other self’s soul room. It was only after he’d taken a few steps into that labyrinth that a twinge of guilt hit. It wasn’t that he thought he’d be unwelcome, he never had been in the past times he’d trespassed, but…it still was a trespass. Even though their souls were shared, true partners in this strange friendship of theirs, Yuugi doubted that his other self had ever entered Yuugi’s soul room, even though it was wide open to him.

Still, even though the thought occurred to him, Yuugi didn’t turn back. He wanted to talk – about what, he didn’t know, but he was restless tonight, and since he had slipped out of wakefulness into this place hidden between their souls and not into dreams instead, he wasn’t going to let that go to waste.

His other self was here somewhere, among the endless stairs in every impossible direction. Yuugi picked one and started walking. He didn’t fear getting lost, here, even if the place seemed designed for that very purpose.

Though this place was a mystery even to his other self, he’d always found his way out when Yuugi needed him.

Title: They'll take your arms now, then take your legs off
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: G
Words: 100
Characters: Original Inquisitor
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Rejection
Summary: An inquisitor goes about his favorite part of the job.
(Warning for non-graphic torture)

The inquisitor waited until the screams gave way to sharp, labored breaths, and a beat longer, before he granted the miserable creature in front of him a temporary reprieve.

“Now,” he said, “will you tell us where the Jedi is?”

His victim only spit at him, the rejection clear enough.

Well, he’d say it was a pity, but that would be a lie. Truth be told, he didn’t much expect to yield any fruitful information out of this; torture rarely did.

But information wasn’t the point. The pain was the point, a suitable punishment for those who defied the Empire.

Title: Just tell that devil we've been used
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: G
Words: 100
Characters: N/A
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Freedom
Summary: The promises (lies) of the Sith.

You were promised everything and anything you could wish for.

The dark side was good at making promises, because it never needed to keep them. How could anything that needed to be concerned with feasibility and consequences ever compete?

Power, it whispered, but never spoke of how it would always threaten to slip out of your grasp, never enough.

Freedom, it whispered, but only if you were strong by the standards of the Sith. Only if you took it by force, leaving no freedom for those crushed under your heel.

Immortality, it whispered, but to your apprentice it whispered, “Kill.”

Title: Returning Home
Fandom: Sinners
Rating: G
Words: 200
Characters: Sammie Moore
Relationships: N/A
Prompt: Fall
Summary: Sammie's thoughts as he returns home, traumatized, in the immediate aftermath.

Sammie only makes it home by leaving no room in his head for anything except the car and the road and the way back. Everything else is forced out of his head and into his body and it has nowhere else to go, trembling and trembling and clutching with a grip so tight it would hurt if he could register anything beyond grief. Somehow he releases the steering wheel and limps his way inside, distantly aware he’s a wreck in more ways than one.

But the remnants of the guitar continue to dig into his palm, and Sammie cannot relax his grip even if he wants to. Even as his father orders it, pleads for his soul, pleads, in his own way, for Sammie to be alright, to be saved and safe.

Sammie cannot let the guitar fall.

It’s not a conscious thought. His thoughts are all a haze, numb; the specifics are still stuck in his trembling skin and the wounds on his face.

Sammie does not let the guitar fall.

His father knows Sammie had a brush with the devil. But Sammie can’t explain...

That guitar had been his salvation. And so he will not let it fall.
