Title: Never Let Them See You Smile
Fandom: OZ (HBO)
Character: Tobias Beecher
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 167
Prompt: Transparent
Summary: Beecher receives some good advice during his first days in Oz, which he forgets
One of the first things Tobias Beecher learned in Oz came from his sponsor, Dino Ortolani, who simply told him not to smile. He wasn't sure how accurate that was because Dino himself turned up dead not soon after. He did learn how to hide his emotions and not be so transparent. Vern hadn't taken kindly to his moping, so he had to hide his sadness and disgust around him. Anger got tucked away, down deep. He didn't quite trust himself with those feelings.
Then Chris Keller entered his life and all those feelings he'd suppressed rose to the surface once again. He found himself giddy and smiling. He couldn't hide the fact that he was falling in love. It felt so good to let those emotions out. He couldn't help it.
Three weeks later, he was lying in a hospital bed, arms and legs broken, rage and the pain of betrayal simmering just under the surface.
Dino Ortolani was right. Never let them see you smile.
