“That Akashi sure knows how to throw a party, huh?”
Kuroko turns to the familiar voice and smiles. “Aomine-kun. You made it.”
Aomine shrugs and loosens his tie. “Yeah, I made it. Saw the whole thing. I’m not gonna miss out on a friend’s wedding, I’m not that bad.”
“I heard you didn’t respond to the RSVP until the last minute.”
“Who told you—?”
“Akashi said he suspected as much and left open a spot for you during the planning,” Kuroko says and gestures to the seat across from him.
Aomine peeks at the name card and curses, “Bastard.”
“Agreed.”
Aomine snorts. He takes off his jacket and drapes it haphazardly over his assigned chair before sitting down sideways in it, arms crossed over his dark blue vest.
In silence, they watch Akashi and Reo mingle about, rings sparkling on their fingers. They exude happiness and love and adoration. Kuroko sighs. He glances at Aomine who’s tapping his fingers on his arm, clenching his jaw, trying his damnedest not to look at Kuroko. It hurts.
“Aomine-kun…”
“Don’t know if I’d rather hear “Daiki” coming from you, Tetsu.”
“…I guess this really isn’t the time or place.”
Aomine clicks his tongue. “Nope.”
Uncomfortable silence settles back between them. Kuroko is well aware he could get up and go find someone else to talk to. He knows he can have a good time at his dear friend’s wedding. He can leave this table with his ex pouting across from him, but he’s stuck in his chair, too many words sitting at the tip of his tongue.
Kuroko needs to do something, maybe there are still vanilla cupcakes left over, so with great effort he stands up only for a hand to grab his wrist. He tenses. When he turns to Aomine, he isn’t even meeting his eye.
“Tetsu.”
“Yes?”
“Did I ever tell you I got a ring for you?”
Kuroko takes a deep breath, his shoulders go slack. “No, but I had my suspicions.”
Aomine’s hand loosens, drifts to wrap around Kuroko’s. “We could’a had this.”
“A portrait painter and string quartet?”
“No!” Aomine sputters, “Not all that! I meant a wedding! Just a wedding!”
Kuroko chuckles, can’t help but admire how Aomine’s hand fits perfectly in his. “You never asked, though.”
Aomine huffs. “Yeah, because I was too chicken shit. I’ve changed, Tetsu, it’s been—”
“Four years.”
“Yeah! I can, y’know, settle down now. I just…didn’t want you to keep waitin’ for me.”
Kuroko ponders his next response carefully. “I’d rather you not speak for me. I would have waited.”
“Okay, well…what if…”
“What if…?”
Aomine inhales then exhales heavily through his nose, meets Kuroko’s eyes dead-on. “Tetsu, would you marry—”
Kuroko launches his free hand to cover Aomine’s mouth. Aomine curses against his palm; Kuroko can’t help but smile.
“Proposing at a wedding is rude, Daiki.”
