Title: Karma
Fandom: OZ (HBO)
Character: Eddie Hunt
Prompt: Fire
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 335
Summary: Months after Hunt takes part in Donald Groves' execution, he finds himself facing his own firing squad.
It's ironic, Eddie thinks as he is dragged to the front lines with the rest of the hostages. Ironic that in this moment, his last thoughts are going to be of Donald Groves.
It's Karma. That's what it is. He took part in that firing squad. Hell, his gun probably held the fatal bullet. He was so sure of it at the time. They told them that one of the guns held blanks. It could have been his, but he doubted it.
Right now, none of the guns that the S.O.R.T. team was loading contain blanks. Eddie knows this. With his hands bound, his mouth taped, and the power out, there's no way they'll be able to tell the difference between the hostages and the riot leaders.
The firing squad was so organized. There was a protocol they had to follow and they did just that. No one squeezed the trigger until the command to fire was issued. There was a cacophonous burst of gunfire and then silence. He could see Groves in front of him, slumped forward, blood flowing from a wound in his chest.
He wonders if Groves would have pleaded with them not to shoot if the hood didn't cover his head. If he could look them in the eyes, would they have been able to pull the trigger? If Eddie wasn't running hot, so filled with adrenaline and hatred, could he have shot a man who was watching him take aim?
He can hear them now, the guys from S.O.R.T. They have made it through the first gate and are approaching the seized unit. The smell of smoke hangs heavy in the air. His heart is beating so hard he thinks it will burst out of his chest. He knows what is about to happen, knows he can't change it.
His last thought is of Donald Groves. He wonders if Groves picked the firing squad because he knew the end would be quick.
In this moment, he hopes for the same.
