Constance brought him by the house to take a look. She had a number of them on her list, but this was in a new development. Charlie liked the openness of it right away.
“I'll take it,” he said.
“Are you sure? I've got an agent who's got a house on the beach. And another that's on a bluff that overlooks the Pacific.”
“Nothing on the ocean. Do you have the paperwork?”
“I thought we'd spend the day house-hunting.”
“No need. This is the house for me. A new house for a new life.”
“Maybe we can look for furnishings?”
“Maybe.”
Constance would later learn that the ocean was like another wall to Charlie. He didn't want to look out onto anything that felt inescapable. Inland, he had the illusion of freedom and after twelve years in prison, that illusion was a comfort.
