Characters: Miyako Arata, Himezuka Theo, Sakaki Kyouichi, Senda Reiji, Kanoichi Akane, Suzuka
Summary: Arata gets summoned to the Kanoichi house on day like any other, but it turns out it's not for a case. A short story told in 5 vignettes.
Request
“Hey, Arata!” Theo waved him down as soon as he walked into the office. “I’ve got a request for you from the Chiyoda Ward.”
“Chiyoda?”
“Something about Suzu.” Theo added.
“What?” Arata was immediately on the alert. “Is something wrong?”
“I don't really remember…” He tried to think back to the earlier conversation. “Akane did ask that you come by soon.”
Hearing this, Arata turned to Kyouichi and gave him a pleading look.
“…Fine.” Kyouichi lifted his glasses to rub the bridge of his nose. “Go.”
“Thanks!” He turned around and ran out, never even making it to his desk.
Hungry
An hour or so into their shift, Reiji walked into the office with a cup of coffee and sat down at his desk with the tired resignation of someone with mountains of paperwork to get through in a single night.
After rummaging through his desk drawers, he sat up and looked around, suddenly realising something.
“Where’s Arata?” He wasn’t one for being late.
“Playing hooky.” Came Theo’s smiling response.
Reiji merely frowned, unconvinced.
“He’s at the Kanoichi house.” Kyouichi offered.
Reiji nodded, then frowned again. “Why? Something I should know?”
“Nope.” Theo reassured him, looking rather amused. “They were hungry.”
Lunch
“I’m here!” Arata had rushed to the Chiyoda Ward first, then redirected to the Kanoichi house.
Akane looked pleasantly surprised as she welcomed him. “I didn’t think we’d see you so soon.”
“I heard Suzu needed something?” He asked nervously.
“It’s nothing urgent, just…” Her expression turned somewhat sheepish, and she glanced around. “I think she’s been trying to make lunch?”
Arata had certainly not been expecting this. “What?”
“Here.” Akane led him towards the kitchen, where they found Suzuka bouncing back and forth between messy counters brandishing a spoon.
“Arata!” The Mansion God caught sight of him and smiled.
Finish
“You didn’t have to scare him like that.” Kyouichi chided after Theo recounted the entirety of Akane’s message.
“I figured he needed a break.” Theo shrugged.
After the whole ordeal with Kohaku’s brother their division had a whole bunch of cases left to finish, and Arata had been working overtime practically non-stop since.
“You could’ve just explained.”
“But then he wouldn’t have gone!” Theo defended himself. “He’s been looking like death lately, I’m seriously concerned he might just collapse.”
Kyouichi stared at him for a few moments, then smirked. “I guess you’re taking up his workload tonight, then.”
“Wait, no—!”
Learning
“So, you’re learning how to cook?” Arata asked while squatting down to the Mansion God’s level.
“So, you’re learning how to cook?” Arata asked while squatting down to the Mansion God’s level.
Suzuka nodded enthusiastically.
“Why?” Akane asked.
“I heard you all have been too busy with work to eat properly.” Suzuka explained. “I wanted to help.”
Both humans were seriously touched, so much so they were almost willing to overlook the chaotic state of the kitchen.
“Thanks Suzu, but…” Arata tried to decline her help, but found his words lacking when staring into her sparkling eyes. “Why don’t I teach you?”
“Really?!” Akane and Suzuka spoke in unison.
“Sure,” He laughed. “I have time now.”
