“Do you think this was the reason that I was always better than the other Girl Scouts at archery?” asked Buffy, readying her bow and arrow to shoot at the cardboard cut-outs of vampires that Giles had set up.
“If I recall, a potential Slayer's gifts don't fully come into effect until the Slayer in line before her dies. Maybe this is just something that you're good at.”
Buffy let an arrow fly and reached for the next. “The targets at camp weren't as interesting,” she said, taking aim at the forehead of a cardboard vampire. “If only there was a way to make these explode into dust like the real thing.”
“Not without magic. Or a hand grenade.”
“Right. Giles, is there a reason we're using a bow and arrow and not the crossbow?”
“Because sometimes it's just nice to go back to the basics.”
“Said no one ever.”
“Think of it as a sort of spiritual practice.”
“I'm a teenager. It's not the time of life one looks for enlightenment.”
“Fair enough, but you're not a typical teenager.”
“True. Better than most at archery. And I can ice skate. Maybe we could take this,” she said, raising the bow in the air, “out to the rink for a real challenge.”
“Perhaps,” replied Giles, watching Buffy pierce another one of his cardboard cutouts with an arrow. He'd need to apply a few layers of duct tape to each one later on, but it was all worth it.
