“Mom,” Brodie began. He'd rehearsed this scene to himself so often he thought he was going to throw up. He was glad it was just the two of them in the room right now. He didn't want to get into this in front of Winston. Coming out was hard enough to do without being reminded that the Beaumonts were among the elite and, regardless of society's acceptance of “that lifestyle” certain behaviors were still frowned upon.
Or so he thought Winston would say.
It was also easier to disown a son that wasn't necessarily a blood relation. Julian was so lucky he was straight and wouldn't have to go through this.
“Brodie?” his mom prompted, successfully derailing his train of thought.
“Mom, I'm-”
“Mom, I'm going to the mall,” yelled Julian, interrupting Brodie and drowning out the word “gay” that stumbled off of Brodie's lips.
“That's fine, sweetie. Do you need your brother to go with you?”
“Ugh, no,” said Julian. The front door slammed before Brenda could respond further.
“He doesn't realize that I worry.”
“Because you're so subtle about it,” mumbled Brodie, getting up and starting to leave the room.
Just when he reached the door, Brenda asked, “Brodie, honey, did you have something to tell me?”
“No,” said Brodie, leaving the den and closing the door behind him.
The hallway might as well had been a closet.
