banana (Jack & Steve, anywhere in the first two seasons)
It was one thing for Steve to be accident prone and need to receive medical treatment at the hospital where his dad and best friends worked, it was another to be the butt of their jokes yet again.
While he waited in the awkward wheelchair to be taken in to the X-Ray room, Steve glared at Jack who was still giggling at his latest mishap.
"You're a cop and you..." Jack resumed giggling.
Rolling his eyes at his friend, Steve muttered, "It's a real shame I left my gun in your car."
"I chased a perp down an alley, slipped on a banana skin and have probably fractured my ankle."
"Sorry Steve." Jack gently bumped against their shoulders. "The way you got injured is funny."
alien (Jesse, post Alienated)
Jesse had read the same words on the page more times than he wanted to count. He'd somehow managed to survive one of the most surreal and terrifying experiences of his life and yet he was struggling to summarise it for his diary. Nobody else was going to see these words he is now committing to paper to navigate his emotions in the aftermath of the ordeal.
I remember arriving at the cabin and setting up my things for a short break near the lake. I don't remember how I got to Utah or why I believed I'd been abducted by aliens. Maybe Susan was right after all, I need to take a real vacation.
Jesse closed the diary, throwing the pen against the wall.
wish (Amanda & Dion, Gangland, mentions of child abuse and fostering/adoption)
"Dr Bentley, I did something when I got sent back to the foster home."
"What did you do sweetheart?"
Dion took a calming breath before answering. "I made a wish that you would save me from the bad beatings."
Amanda ran her thumbs just below her eyes to wipe at the threatening tears on hearing a statement similar to one she had made to the family who adopted her when she was a little younger than Dion. "Has it come true?"
"I think it did come true because you came back and took me out of that house. I feel safe for the first time in a long time."
"Dion, you will always be protected, safe and loved with me and my friends."
"Really?"
"Always."
sick (Delores & Mark, anywhere in the first two seasons)
Mark sneezed loudly enough for Delores to hear it in the next office.
"Someone should be home in bed," she said too cheerfully for Mark to appreciate in his current state.
"Who is going to do my paperwork? You?"
"Of course not."
Mark sneezed again. "Allergies," he tried to lie to his secretary.
Delores place the back of her hand against his forehead. "You're burning up."
"Don't tell Norman but I think I may have caught a cold from one of the children."
"When you were clowning around."
"When I was showing them magic tricks to cheer them up."
Delores glanced at the various open doors before giving him a pointed look. "Go home, I'll cover for you with Briggs."
"All right, Delores, you win."
